4 Vitamins and Minerals to Include in Your Diet as You Age

Aging comes with lots of new challenges. Parts of your body don't work as well as they used to, and random pains seem to be interrupting everyday activities.

Your body experiences years of wear and tear to keep up with you, and along the way it loses essential vitamins and minerals that it needs to function at its best. There is no way you can stop this from happening, but a good place to start is by making sure you get all the nutrients you need to keep you feeling happy and healthy. First, you need to focus on the vitamins and minerals your body may not get from food; or need an extra dose. Once identifying these, you can get supplements to make sure you have enough of them in your everyday diet. It is important to make sure you're getting enough of these four vitamins and minerals in your diet.

1. Calcium

Calcium works to make your bones stronger, which is important as you age because you may lose bone density, or develop osteoporosis causing your bones to be incredibly fragile. As you get older, your body does not absorb this mineral as easily, so it is important to make an effort to add it to your diet. Adding SmoothieBox’s Collagen Peptides to your daily smoothie is an easy way to supplement your diet.

2. Magnesium

Magnesium helps the body make protein and bone, all while keeping your blood sugar and blood pressure stable. It is often found in nuts, seeds and leafy greens and helps older men and women improve their bone mineral density. Leafy greens and nuts, like those found in SmoothieBox’s Green Super Smoothie, can also help  reduce heart disease.

3. Vitamin D

The body needs vitamin D to properly absorb calcium. The easiest way to get vitamin D is by spending time in the sun, but as you get older, it is harder for the body to convert sunlight into vitamin D. Without vitamin D, your body will not be able to absorb calcium properly leading to weakening of the bones.

4. Vitamin B12

This vitamin helps create blood and nerve cells, and like calcium, it is also more difficult for your body to absorb with age.
